Jede zweite Tonne Uran wird inzwischen im sogenannten Lösungsbergbau („in-situ-leaching“, ISL) gefördert. Dabei pressen Pumpen über Bohrungen große Mengen Säure oder Lauge in den Untergrund, die das Uran aus dem Gestein lösen soll. Die strahlende Brühe fördern sie allerdings nur zum Teil wieder nach oben. Eine Sanierung der großräumig verseuchten Böden und Grundwasserschichten ist oftmals gar nicht möglich.
Einer Studie des Geologischen Dienstes der USA zufolge war bei keiner einzigen Bohrstelle das Grundwasser anschließend wieder so sauber wie zuvor. Und die kasachische Staatsfirma Kazatomprom, die jährlich Tausende Tonnen Uran im Lösungsbergbau gewinnt, hält eine Sanierung erst gar nicht für nötig: Die kasachischen Böden würden vielmehr über eine „einzigartige Fähigkeit zur Selbstreinigung“ verfügen.
